Castaway Thrifts: Brand Guidelines

Brief
Rebrand a non-profit and create brand guidelines and a brand sheet.
Timeline
16 weeks
Role
Brand Designer, Advertising Designer, Copywriter, Illustrator
Research
Island Thrifts is a non-profit thrift store located in Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island in Seattle.
I reviewed the visual identities of local and national non-profit thrift stores to see what was working and what wasn't.
Renaming
Island Thrifts is a fairly generic name. I chose the name Castaway Thrifts to represent the members of the community who are in need of help.

Custom Logotypes
I designed three custom logotypes.
The first logotype is based on the typeface Cherry Blossoms, using a hand-drawn style. I refined its rough edges to achieve a cleaner look.
The second logotype is based on the typeface Rafaella. I modified the T, F, and R to get a more cohesive look.
My final logotype is a custom type based on the Fleur Display typeface, blending the nautical and organic vibes from the previous logotypes. I remade the A and S to get a cohesive and unified logo.
Moodboard Iterations
I designed two different moodboards to present to this client. We discussed what they liked and what they didn't, and then moved forward from there.

Final Branding
I developed an icon system, which can be used as a pattern to be applied across various platforms.
For the color palette, I drew inspiration from the nearby waters, paired with bright, optimistic tones that reflect the uplifting and supportive spirit of Castaway Thrifts.
Implementation
I developed an experiential advertising campaign to launch the rebrand, partnering with a local sewing store and teaching studio, The Makehouse Co-op.
Castaway Thrifts will host an upcycling workshop where participants use donated materials to create a tote bag. This event highlights the sustainability and community-driven values of the non-profit, showcasing its commitment to both environmental responsibility and local engagement.

Brand Guidelines
Check out my 48-page brand guidelines, which delve into every detail of the rebrand.
This book covers the usage and misusage of all brand elements and assets.
Given that this is a small non-profit, it also includes explanations tailored for non-designers, ensuring that everyone can understand and implement the brand effectively.
